About The Wizard of Oz at Sphere

This is a film, not a stage show, and that is the first thing to be clear about. There is no live cast. What makes it unusual is the venue: Sphere's interior screen wraps around and above the audience, far beyond the shape of a cinema screen, and the 1939 film has been adapted to fill it. Material that was never in the original frame has been extended outward so the image reaches the edges of your vision.

The practical consequence is that where you sit changes what you see more than at almost any other venue. The screen curves around and over the seating bowl, so seats low and close sit underneath a large part of the image and have to look up and around to take it in. Seats higher in the bowl and centred sit back from the surface and see the composition as a whole. Neither is wrong, but they are genuinely different experiences of the same screening, and the difference is larger than a seating map communicates.

Sphere also runs haptics and environmental effects in parts of the seating bowl rather than throughout, so some sections include physical effects that others do not. Whether a given seat has them is a property of the section, not something the listing controls.

Because it is a film on a schedule, it runs multiple times a day, and the run time is close to the original film rather than the length of a theatre production. Sessions are shorter and turn over faster than an evening show, which makes it easier to combine with other plans and harder to arrive late for without missing something.
