About The Lion King

The Lion King on stage is not a straight transfer of the film. Its reputation rests on the design: performers wear and operate visible puppets and masks rather than hiding inside costumes, so you watch the human and the animal at the same time and never stop being aware of both. The opening number brings the animals through the auditorium itself, and it is the moment nearly everyone remembers afterwards.

Because so much of the show is visual and processional, sightlines matter more than closeness. Seats that take in the full width of the stage and the aisles get the staging as it was designed to be seen. Very close seats put you underneath the action and can miss the shapes the puppetry builds across the whole stage, which is the opposite of the usual instinct about paying more to sit nearer.

The score mixes the songs from the film with African choral music written for the stage version, and a good deal of the singing is not in English. It carries without translation, and that is part of why the production travels so well to audiences who do not share a first language.
