About The Lion King

The Lion King on stage is not a straight transfer of the film. Its reputation rests on the design: performers wear and operate visible puppets and masks rather than hiding inside costumes, so you watch the human and the animal at the same time and never stop being aware of both. The opening number brings the animals through the auditorium itself, and it is the moment nearly everyone remembers afterwards.

Because so much of the show is visual and processional, sightlines matter more than closeness. Seats that take in the full width of the stage and the aisles get the staging as it was designed to be seen. Very close seats put you underneath the action and can miss the shapes the puppetry builds across the whole stage, which is the opposite of the usual instinct about paying more to sit nearer.

The score mixes the songs from the film with African choral music written for the stage version, and a good deal of the singing is not in English. It carries without translation, and that is part of why the production travels so well to audiences who do not share a first language.

It runs around two hours and thirty minutes with an interval. Of the long-running musicals it is the most genuinely child-friendly, though the story includes a death that lands hard for younger viewers, and the first act is longer than most children expect going in.

Are The Lion King ticket prices going up?

Prices have held steady: over the last 30 days, the cheapest ticket for a typical The Lion King date has barely moved.

Is it the same as the film?

The story is the same but the experience is not. The stage version is built on visible puppetry and mask work, with additional music written for the theatre, and much of its effect comes from watching the performer and the animal at once.

Should I pay more to sit close?

Not necessarily. The staging is processional and uses the full width of the stage and the aisles, so a complete view matters more than proximity. Very close seats can miss the shapes the puppetry builds.

Is some of it not in English?

Yes. Parts of the score use African choral music sung in other languages. It carries without translation and needs no preparation.

Is it suitable for young children?

It is the most child-friendly of the long-running musicals, but it includes a death that affects younger viewers strongly, and the first act is long. Children who can manage the sit tend to do well with it.
