About Oliver!

Oliver! has survived since the sixties because it solved a hard problem: it turns a bleak Dickens novel about child poverty into a musical without pretending the bleakness away. The songs are famous enough to be mistaken for folk material, and the show carries a genuinely dark story underneath them, including violence that is not softened for the family audience the marketing suggests.

That is the thing most worth knowing before booking for children. The music and the workhouse comedy are broad and accessible, and then the plot turns hard in the second act. Productions stage that turn with varying degrees of directness, but it is in the text and it is not a surprise the show can avoid.

Casts are large and include a company of children who, as with any production using child performers, rotate between performances under legal limits on their working hours.
