About Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera follows a masked figure living beneath a Paris opera house and his obsession with a young soprano in the company above. It is among the most performed musicals ever written, and it is the closest the mainstream repertoire gets to opera.

That comparison is not marketing. The vocal writing is genuinely operatic, particularly for the soprano lead, and productions are usually cast with singers who could work in an opera house. If you have avoided musicals because you dislike amplified pop singing, this one is a different proposition and worth reconsidering on those grounds alone.

The production depends on scale: a full orchestra in the pit, a chandelier sequence, and scenery that moves in ways designed to be seen from directly in front. Central seating is therefore worth more here than at shows staged more simply. Seats far to the side lose part of the scenic picture, and the effects that made the show famous are staged for a straight-on view rather than an oblique one.

It runs around two hours and thirty minutes with an interval. The tone is gothic rather than genuinely frightening, but there are sudden loud passages, pyrotechnic effects and stretches of darkness, which can be a great deal for very young children even though the story itself is not explicit.
