About Oliver!

Oliver! has survived since the sixties because it solved a hard problem: it turns a bleak Dickens novel about child poverty into a musical without pretending the bleakness away. The songs are famous enough to be mistaken for folk material, and the show carries a genuinely dark story underneath them, including violence that is not softened for the family audience the marketing suggests.

That is the thing most worth knowing before booking for children. The music and the workhouse comedy are broad and accessible, and then the plot turns hard in the second act. Productions stage that turn with varying degrees of directness, but it is in the text and it is not a surprise the show can avoid.

Casts are large and include a company of children who, as with any production using child performers, rotate between performances under legal limits on their working hours. The adult leads are the roles audiences come for, and casting varies by production, so the listing's production and venue tell you what you are buying.

For seats, this is a traditional book musical staged in traditional houses, and the usual rules apply. Central seats in the stalls or the front of the first tier give you the best balance of detail and stage picture. Large ensemble numbers use the full stage, so extreme side seats lose a share of the choreography, and the deepest parts of upper tiers lose facial detail that matters in the quieter scenes.

Runtime is around two hours and forty minutes with an interval. PickStub is an independent marketplace and is not affiliated with the producers of Oliver!, the Lionel Bart estate, or the theatres staging it.

Frequently asked questions

On PickStub, Oliver! tickets currently start at $30. Across the 166 upcoming dates, the typical cheapest ticket is $39. Prices are live and change as listings sell.

Where can I find the cheapest Oliver! tickets?

The lowest price right now is for Oliver! on November 3, 2026 at Gielgud Theatre, London, from $30.

Are Oliver! ticket prices going up?

Prices have held steady: over the last 30 days, the cheapest ticket for a typical Oliver! date has barely moved.

Is it suitable for children?

Broadly yes, with a caveat. The songs and the early comedy are family material, but the story is Dickens and the second act includes violence that productions do not soften away. Older children handle it better than very young ones.

How long is it?

Around two hours and forty minutes including an interval.

Will I see a specific child performer?

No production guarantees that. Child roles rotate between performers because of legal limits on child performance hours.

Which seats work best?

Central seats in the stalls or the front of the first tier. The ensemble numbers use the whole stage, so extreme side seats lose choreography, and the back of upper tiers loses the facial detail the quieter scenes rely on.

Is PickStub affiliated with the production?

No. PickStub is an independent marketplace with no affiliation to the producers, the Lionel Bart estate, or the theatres. Orders are covered by the PickStub buyer guarantee.
