About New York Mets

The New York Mets are a professional baseball team in Major League Baseball, based in Queens. The club was founded in 1962, the same year the National League returned to New York after the Giants and Dodgers left for California, and it has been the city's National League team ever since.

The Mets' early years were difficult, but the 1969 team, known as the Miracle Mets, won the World Series against the heavily favoured Baltimore Orioles. A second title followed in 1986, in a series remembered for one of the most famous comebacks in the sport. Those two runs remain the high points of the franchise.

The team played at Shea Stadium for decades before moving to Citi Field in 2009. The ballpark sits next to the site of the old stadium, and its design, with the brick facade and the open outfield, refers back to the earlier era of New York baseball.

The Mets share the city with the Yankees, and the two clubs meet each season in a series that splits the city. A game at Citi Field has a distinct character: a knowledgeable crowd, a park that favours pitchers, and a team with a fan base that is used to both heartbreak and memorable runs.
