About Metropolitan Opera

The Metropolitan Opera, known as the Met, is one of the leading opera companies in the world. It was founded in 1883 in New York and has been based at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center since 1966. The company presents a full season of productions each year, drawing singers and conductors from across the world.

Its repertoire spans the core operatic tradition, from the works of Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and Mozart to newer and less familiar pieces. Productions are staged with large casts, orchestra and chorus, and the scale of the house allows for staging that smaller companies cannot attempt.

The opera house itself is part of the experience. The building at Lincoln Center is known for its large stage, its acoustics and the chandeliers in the auditorium, and the season includes both classic revivals and new productions.

The Met has also widened access to opera through live broadcasts to cinemas and through streaming, which has introduced the company to audiences who have never been to the house. Seeing a production in person, though, is a different experience: the size of the orchestra and the voices carried without amplification are the point.
