About Harry Potter and The Cursed Child

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play, not a musical, and that catches some buyers out. It picks the story up nineteen years after the seventh novel ends, following Harry as a father alongside his son, and it is presented as a continuation of the story rather than an adaptation of an existing book.

Its reputation rests on the illusions. The magic is performed live, in front of the audience, using stagecraft rather than screens, and the effects are close enough to conjuring that the production asks audiences not to give away how they are done. That is also why sightlines matter more here than at most plays: illusions are built to be seen from the front of the house, and a steep enough side angle can show you the mechanism instead of the trick.

The show has been staged in two different shapes depending on the city and the period: as two parts seen as separate performances, and as a single condensed version. These are genuinely different purchases, and the difference decides whether you are booking one evening or two. Check which version is running at the venue on your listing before you buy, and if it is the two-part staging, make sure you hold tickets for both.

It assumes you know the books. Someone arriving with only a hazy memory of the films will follow the plot but miss much of what gives it weight, since the emotional payoffs depend on relationships established across seven novels. Older children who know the series get far more from it than younger ones who do not.
