Hamilton tells the life of one of the founders of the United States using hip hop, R&B and conventional musical theatre writing, performed by a cast that deliberately does not look like the eighteenth century. The casting is the argument, not a gimmick: it reframes a founding story as something belonging to the country as it is now rather than as a costume drama.

It is sung and rapped almost from end to end, with very little spoken dialogue, and the lyrics carry the entire plot. That has a practical consequence for choosing a seat.
