About Hamilton

Hamilton tells the life of one of the founders of the United States using hip hop, R&B and conventional musical theatre writing, performed by a cast that deliberately does not look like the eighteenth century. The casting is the argument, not a gimmick: it reframes a founding story as something belonging to the country as it is now rather than as a costume drama.

It is sung and rapped almost from end to end, with very little spoken dialogue, and the lyrics carry the entire plot. That has a practical consequence for choosing a seat. The words come fast, and anyone who cannot hear them clearly loses the story rather than just a few jokes. This is one of the shows where sitting further back in a good acoustic position beats sitting close but hard to one side.

The staging is deliberately spare: a turntable, a two-level wooden set, and choreography that keeps rearranging the same space into new places. Because so much depends on formations moving across the full width of the floor, a complete view of the stage is worth more here than proximity to it. Extreme side seats in the stalls tend to be the weakest value in the building.

It runs around two hours and forty-five minutes with an interval. The language is adult in places and the story takes in war, duelling and infidelity, so it suits teenagers and adults rather than young children. Familiarity with the cast recording beforehand genuinely helps a first-time viewer keep up.
