About Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil is not one show. It is a company running many productions at the same time, and they differ from each other far more than the shared name suggests. Reading about one tells you very little about another, which is the single most useful thing to know before booking.

The clearest split is between resident and touring productions. A resident show was built into a purpose-made theatre and cannot leave it, so its staging can use the whole building as a machine: water, moving floors, staging that works vertically as well as across. A touring production has to come apart and go back together in a new city every few weeks, so it plays arenas or a big top and gets its effect from the performers rather than from the architecture. Neither is better. They are different products at similar prices.

Seating follows from that. Much of the work happens well above the stage floor, so the front row is not automatically the best seat in the house: sit too close and you spend the evening looking up, losing the shapes the company builds in the air. The middle of the house, slightly raised, is usually where the staging is designed to be read from. Seats hard to the side and close to the stage are the ones most likely to lose sightlines into deep or layered staging.

The shows tend to run around ninety minutes to two hours, and many play without an interval. There is little or no dialogue that needs translating, which makes them unusually easy to attend in a country whose language you do not speak, and is part of why they work for mixed groups and for children old enough to sit through them.
