About Chicago Cubs

Wrigley Field is one of the two oldest ballparks in baseball and the reason many people go to a Cubs game regardless of the standings. It sits inside a residential neighbourhood rather than in a parking complex, which means you arrive through streets of bars and houses, and it means the park was built to the shape of the block rather than to a modern template.

Being old has consequences you can buy by accident. Parts of the lower bowl have structural columns that hold up the upper deck and block part of the view, and some seats are angled towards the outfield rather than home plate, so you sit turned for three hours. Both are disclosed on listings when they apply, and both are worth reading for rather than assuming.

The features people come for are specific and real: ivy covering the outfield walls, a hand-turned scoreboard, and the bleachers, which are a general seating area with their own culture rather than premium seats with a good view. Rooftop clubs on the buildings across the street sell their own admission and are a separate thing from a stadium ticket.

The park's other characteristic is wind. It sits close enough to Lake Michigan that the wind direction changes the game itself, blowing out towards the outfield on some days and straight in on others, and it makes April and September games considerably colder than the forecast temperature implies.

Day games are a Cubs habit more than a novelty, since the park went without lights for decades and a large share of the schedule is still played in the afternoon. What should I check before buying a cheap seat?

Two things specific to an old park: structural columns that block part of the view, and seats angled towards the outfield rather than home plate. Both are disclosed on the listing when they apply.

What are the bleachers?

A general seating area in the outfield with its own culture rather than premium seating. People buy them for the experience, not the sightline.

Are the rooftops across the street the same as a ticket?

No. The rooftop clubs on surrounding buildings sell their own admission and are a separate product from a seat inside the ballpark.

Why is it colder than the forecast?

The park sits close to Lake Michigan and the wind off it cuts through the bowl, which also changes how the ball carries. April and September games in particular feel colder than the temperature suggests.
