About Atletico de Madrid

Atlético left the Vicente Calderón, their riverside home of half a century, for the Metropolitano in 2017. The new stadium holds around 70,000 under a single sweeping roof that covers every seat, which matters in a city that is very hot in late summer and cold on winter nights.

The bowl is large and continuous, and the lower tier runs close to the pitch. The upper tier is steep and high, and in the top rows the players look small, though the view of the whole field is complete. For most visitors the best balance is the lower part of the upper tier along the touchline. The south end behind the goal is where the organised home support gathers.

Atlético have built one of the most loyal followings in Spain, and big matches sell out. The Madrid derby against Real Madrid is the fixture of the season, followed by matches against Barcelona and the knockout rounds of the Champions League. Many league matches, though, are accessible, and the stadium's size means seats are often available closer to the date than at smaller grounds.

The stadium has its own Métro stop, Estadio Metropolitano on line 7, and the trains run frequently on matchdays. Expect queues at the station after the final whistle; walking a stop further out is often faster. There is parking around the stadium for those who drive. Spanish league matches often kick off late in the evening, so check the time before booking travel.
