Orchestra Hall At Chicago Symphony Center guide

Orchestra Hall is the main concert room at the Chicago Symphony Center on South Michigan Avenue, a purpose-built hall with about 2,500 seats. It follows a classic design: a rectangular room with a stage at one end and tiers of seating wrapping the sides and rear.

The hall is known for a clear, direct sound, and the seats closest to the stage are not automatically the best. Mid-hall seats on the main floor often give the most balanced mix, while the side terraces put you close to the orchestra with a view across the players.

Programs range from full orchestral concerts to chamber music, recitals and film screenings with live accompaniment. Evenings usually start at a fixed time with a single intermission, and latecomers are seated at a suitable break.

The building sits on the edge of the downtown lakefront district, within walking distance of transit stops and hotels. Arrive with time for the lobby, which gets crowded before a full concert.

Seats behind the stage are sold for some programs and offer a close view of the conductor, though the balance is different from the main floor. Check the program before choosing them if you care about the sound.
