About The Wizard of Oz - Immersive Film Experience

Immersive projection shows work on a different model from both cinema and theatre, and the confusion between the three is where most disappointment comes from. The room is the screen: imagery is projected across walls, floors and surfaces around you, and you are inside the projection rather than facing it. There is generally no fixed narrative seat, no cast, and no single direction to look.

That means admission usually works by timed entry rather than by curtain time. You are admitted for a session and move through the space during it, and in most venues the projected sequence loops, so arriving partway through is less damaging than walking into a play late. Check the entry time on your listing, since it is an entry window rather than a start time in the theatrical sense.

Seating is generally limited and unreserved where it exists at all. Many of these venues provide beanbags, benches or floor space rather than rows, and the experience assumes people will stand and walk. If standing for the length of a session is a problem, that is worth checking with the venue in advance, because the format offers less accommodation by default than a seated theatre does.

The venues themselves are typically converted industrial or exhibition spaces rather than purpose-built houses, which affects everything from acoustics to temperature to how far the walk from the entrance is. They are also often outside city centres, where the floor space is.

This is a good format for young children, who are not required to sit still, and for anyone who finds a two-hour seated show hard. It is a poor format for anyone expecting the film itself, since it is an interpretation built from imagery rather than a screening. Over the last 30 days, the cheapest ticket for a typical The Wizard of Oz - Immersive Film Experience date has come down about 14.8%.

Is this a screening of the film?

No. It is a projection-based experience that surrounds you with imagery across the walls and floor of a large space. It is an interpretation rather than the film itself.
