About The Book Of Mormon

The Book of Mormon comes from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who make South Park, working with Robert Lopez. It follows two young missionaries sent to Uganda, and it is offensive on purpose in the same way their television work is offensive on purpose. The targets are organised religion, American naivety, and the idea that good intentions are sufficient.

What surprises people is how conventional the musical writing is underneath the content. The score is affectionate, old-fashioned Broadway pastiche, played completely straight, and that contrast is exactly what makes the jokes land. The awards it won were for craft rather than for shock, and it is a genuinely well-made musical wearing deliberately bad manners.

Be clear about what you are booking. The language is constant and explicit, and the material about religion, disease and violence is designed to make an audience uncomfortable a moment before it makes them laugh. It is not a family show under any reading, and venues do not treat it as one. If you are buying tickets for a group, make sure everyone knows what they are coming to.

It runs around two hours and thirty minutes with an interval and is staged as a traditional book musical, so central seating with a clear view of the full stage serves it best.
