About Champions League

The UEFA Champions League is the highest level of club football in Europe. It began in 1955 as the European Cup, a knock-out competition for national champions, and was rebranded as the Champions League in 1992 when it opened up to more clubs from each league. Today it gathers the strongest sides from across the continent into a single season-long tournament.

The competition runs from autumn to spring. The format has changed over the years, but the shape is consistent: a phase of group or league matches followed by knock-out rounds played home and away, and a single final at a neutral venue. The anthem and the midweek fixtures have become a familiar part of the football calendar.

Clubs from England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France have dominated the roll of honour, with Real Madrid holding the record number of titles, followed by sides such as AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Liverpool. A place in the competition is a goal in itself for most European clubs, and qualification often comes down to the final weeks of a domestic season.

For supporters, a Champions League night is different from a league match. The stakes are higher, the crowds are louder and every tie can turn on a single goal. Tickets for the biggest fixtures are among the hardest to find in the sport, which is why a live Champions League match is a rare experience.
