Philadelphia guide

Philadelphia's venues form a walkable core around Center City, with stadiums to the south and clubs spread through the surrounding neighborhoods. That layout makes a multi-event weekend realistic without long drives.

The Kimmel Center complex, including Marian Anderson Hall and the Perelman Theater, carries classical, jazz and recital programs, while the Academy Of Music and the Forrest Theatre hold opera, ballet and touring plays. Music and comedy fill Franklin Music Hall, the Fillmore and Helium Comedy Club.

Sports drive the biggest crowd nights at Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field, and those dates affect traffic across the south of the city. Check the schedule before fixing a hotel near the stadium district. Weekend performances and touring openings fill the halls, so book those dates first.

The subway, regional rail and buses reach most of the center, and Center City is easy on foot. Allow extra time on game days, when the Broad Street line and the stadium lots fill early.

Stay in Center City for theater and clubs, or near the stadium complex for a game. Book the main ticket first, and keep one evening open, since the city's smaller music rooms often announce shows close to the date. Check the last train time if you plan a late curtain.
